Large Hadron Collider

December 30, 2008

The Large Hadron Collider is a giant ring tunnel built over 100 meters underground near the franco-swiss border in Switzerland.

It is the largest ion particle collider in the world, and at it’s peak it will be smashing particles together at a staggering 99.9% the speed of light.

Scientists will study the results of the collision and are expecing this to shed light and finally prove the existance of the Higgs Boson.

Some people, fearing the safety of the world, are concerned the resulting collision could cause microscopic blackholes that will engulf the earth and the rest of the known universe.  When asked about this, Stephen Hawking reiterated that hundreds of far more powerful collisions occur in the earths atomosphere everyday without any problems, this is entirely safe.

With the discovery of the higgs boson, or god particle, not too much will change right away.  Having said that, who would have thought that when galileo invented the telescope it would lead to nearly all our current technology.

This will be just the kick we need to produce some of the most profound discoveries in our history.
