America’s Cup

November 24, 2008

On the drive to work this morning Paul asked me if there was any other boat race in the world, besides the Sydney to Hobart, that everyone would just stop for.

“What like the America’s Cup?” I questioned.

“But that’s every 4 years, isn’t it?  And it’s not just in America, is it?”  he replied.

Well we both knew that it wasn’t just for America because we won it back in 1983, but as for the details?

It turns out that the America’s Cup is named after the first team that won the race back in 1851 by a schooner named America.  That yacht club then held the cup until it was beaten by the aussies in 1983, the longest winning streak in sporting history.

It isn’t raced every year, nor is it raced every 4 years, instead it’s raced when a boat meets the conditions of the Deed of Gift and challenges the current holder of the cup.
